AC Running But Not Cooling? 5 Common Reasons and How to Fix Them

When your AC Running But Not Cooling, it is an immediate household emergency. Not only is your comfort at risk, but a system that runs without cooling is wasting a massive amount of electricity. This leads to high utility bills and unnecessary wear on your equipment.

You should remain calm when you discover that someone needs to replace their entire system. At YA Creative Design Partners, we have encountered this situation more than three hundred times. The problem usually stems from basic maintenance problems, which you can fix by yourself.

The guide identifies five main reasons why air conditioners fail to cool properly, while it provides practical solutions. These will help you achieve a cool home environment.

1. A Clogged or Filthy Air Filter

A dirty air filter stands as the main factor that causes systems to stop producing cooling power. The solution to this problem stands as the most basic and cost-effective option to solve.

Your HVAC system works by drawing home air into its system, which then passes through evaporator coils to achieve cooling. The air filter becomes blocked by dust and pet hair. This leads to a complete stop of air movement.

The system fails to perform its basic function of moving air, which results in insufficient cooling air circulation for temperature reduction. The coils will freeze when the filter becomes blocked, which turns your AC into a solid ice block.

How to Fix It: Check your filter immediately. If you cannot see light through the mesh when holding it up to a lamp, it needs to be replaced. Change your filter every 30 days during peak summer months.

2. The Outdoor Condenser Unit is Blocked

The AC system operates through two main components, which include the indoor unit together with the outdoor condenser unit. The outdoor unit functions to release heat which it collects from your home’s interior spaces.

The outdoor unit fails to cool down because tall grass and weeds, together with fallen leaves, block its ability to release heat. The refrigerant loop keeps heat inside when there is no place for it to escape.

The system will produce warm air through the AC unit when this problem occurs. The HVAC system’s core component, which is the compressor, will experience overheating and breakdown because of a dirty condenser.

How to Fix It: Head outside and inspect your condenser unit. Maintain a minimum distance of two feet. This creates an unoccupied space that spans throughout the entire boundary. Remove all bushes and weeds which need to be trimmed back.

Use a garden hose to softly spray the metal fins, which helps remove dirt and pollen from the surface. The delicate aluminum fins will bend if you use a pressure washer on them.

3. Incorrect Thermostat Settings

The solution to most service calls requires only thermostat adjustments which staff members can perform. The smallest error in this area will create major problems for patient comfort.

The thermostat sometimes gets set to “On” instead of its correct “Auto” position. The fan operates continuously when the system is in “On” mode even though the compressor does not perform any cooling functions.

The system produces warm air which moves through the house when the system turns off during its scheduled breaks. The smart home system might override your temperature settings. Through its Eco-mode feature.

How to Fix It: Ensure the thermostat is set to Cool. The fan should operate on Auto mode because it activates only when the system requires cooling for proper air circulation.

The digital thermostat will display a “low battery” alert when its battery power reaches a critical level. The unit will disconnect from the HVAC control board when its battery power becomes too weak to maintain proper operation.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coils

If you notice ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines or on the indoor unit cabinet, your evaporator coils have frozen solid.

Evaporator coils need a constant flow of warm indoor air to prevent moisture from turning into ice. If the airflow is restricted, the coils get too cold.

Once a layer of ice forms, it acts as an insulator. This prevents the refrigerant from absorbing any heat from your home, leaving you with warm air.

How to Fix It: You cannot fix this while the system is running. Turn the AC Off completely at the thermostat and turn the fan to On to melt the ice.

Wait several hours for it to completely defrost before restarting. If the ice returns, you likely have a mechanical issue and need to call a professional.

5. Low Refrigerant Levels (Leaks)

Refrigerant is the “energy carrier” of your AC system. It is responsible for absorbing heat from inside and moving it outside.

There is a myth that an AC “uses up” refrigerant like gas in a car. In reality, a cooling system is a closed loop. If your refrigerant is low, you have a leak.

A leak stops the cooling process and can cause the compressor to burn out due to lack of lubrication. This is a serious issue that requires expert attention.

How to Fix It: This is strictly a job for professionals. Handling refrigerant requires specialized tools and EPA certification. If you hear hissing or bubbling sounds, call an expert immediately.
